- Description
- This paper outlines the modelling of a multi-phase permanent magnet (PMSM) synchronous machine for maritime propulsion applications. The modelling technique of the multiphase PMSM is extended from the standard three-phase PMSM. A novel modelling technique was designed and implemented, which integrates a dynamic electrical front-end with a back-end mathematical model. This allows the developed model to simulate under a variety of practical conditions including unbalanced and fault conditions. Furthermore, non-ideal characteristics of the machine may also be included into the model. The modelling process for a PMSM with an arbitrary number of phases is summarised at the end of the modelling section.A five-phase PMSM with isolated windings was developed and simulated based on the model. The machine was simulated under healthy, unbalanced and fault conditions with results presented only for the first two cases due to space limitations.
